The development of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed journalistic practices, including the news production process. While AI offers the potential to enhance journalists' efficiency, its use also presents challenges regarding accuracy, information verification, and journalistic ethics. This study aims to analyze the use of AI in supporting news production and to identify how journalists examine and verify AI-generated information prior to publication. The study’s novelty lies in its identification of AI usage patterns and the mechanisms for checking and verifying AI outputs within the news production practices of local mass media organizations, namely Radar Blitar and Radio Patria. This usage is selective, as journalists retain control over verifying and determining the suitability of AI outputs based on data accuracy, information balance, adherence to the 5W+1H framework, news value, and alignment with the substance and character of each media organization. The study demonstrates that AI functions as a supporting tool in journalistic practice, while journalists maintain professional control over the examination, verification, and determination of information suitability for news reporting.
